Experts Rule: 15 Ways To Establish Authority in Your Field

If your business is about you and you’re building a personal brand, then it’s essential that you look for ways to stand out against the competition by establishing authority in your field. The process starts by providing helpful information to your target audience—content that appeals to their wants, needs, and challenges. Following are ways that you can stand out and make an impact within your field.

1. Write a Book – A book is an ultimate ticket to establishing yourself as an authority. Authors are perceived as instant subject matter experts, which can attract media attention, dazzle clients and prospects, create opportunities for speaking engagements, and so much more. If this is on your list of goals, move it up to top priority!

2. Publish Articles – Writing articles allows you to share your opinions and gain exposure with a greater audience. You can write for online outlets or print publications. Better yet, write for as many outlets as you can.

3. Host a Blog – I am a huge advocate for blogging. It’s a wonderful way to connect with your audience, increase traffic to your website, and establish yourself as an expert in your subject matter. Write new posts two to three times each week for best results.

4. Build a Social Media Following – Whether you focus on just one network—such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn—or you spend time on all of them, you have an incredible opportunity to reach an audience. Share links to your blog posts, news, quick tips, opinions, and questions. Let your followers know you’re paying attention and that you appreciate them.

5. Create a YouTube Channel – These days when you search Google for just about any “how to” topic, the top ten results almost always include a video from YouTube. Invest in an inexpensive flip camera and put together a compelling series of short videos. Then promote them to your social networks and feature them on your own website for even greater exposure.

6. Become a Professional Speaker – There’s nothing like the captive audience you can have as a speaker, and it’s easier to get started than you might think. Begin by writing a compelling description for one or more presentations and then reach out to local trade organizations, schools, networking groups, churches, and other places where you can locate your target audience.

7. Be a Guest on Internet Radio Shows – This is a hugely under-utilized opportunity for subject matter experts. There are thousands of internet radio shows, many with a strong niche following. You can find programs on everything from how to be a better parent and gardening, to how to sell on eBay and strategies for growing a business. Guests are often featured for 15 minutes up to a full hour. See http://blogtalkradio.comhttp://alltalkradio.com, and http://womensradio.com to get started.

8. Host Your Own Radio Show – It’s remarkably easy to start your own radio show online. If this is a format that entices you, why not give it a try?

9. Host Teleseminars – The teleseminar format has been around for a long time now. With a conference line and a phone you can host events where you lead an educational discussion, or you can invite guests to give speeches or interviews. Offer events for free in order to build your audience and grow your mailing list. If you already have a solid following, you can consider charging for events—just make sure the content is original and valuable to your audience. Services to investigate include http://instantteleseminar.com and http://freeteleseminar.com.

10. Host Online Events – Take teleseminars and webinars to a whole new level by conducting an entire conference online. You can invite a series of guests over a period of time, charge for admission, and sell the recordings for years to come. A great tool for managing event registration is http://eventbrite.com.

11. Claim Your Expertise – You can call yourself an expert, but a better option might be to create a catchy tagline for yourself that explains what you do. It’s important to let people know what you have to offer, and this messaging should be consistent across your website, social media profiles, business cards, and marketing collateral.

12. Become a Leader – There are many ways to become an influential leader in your field. You could volunteer to serve with a related trade organization. Or, my personal favorite, start your own group—which can be in person or online. I run an online group for Nonfiction Authors on LinkedIn and a local group for speakers via http://meetup.com. These groups have allowed me to reach countless people, establish myself as an authority, and ultimately grow my business.

13. Create and Distribute Information Products – You can create products such as ebooks, special reports, white papers, workbooks, podcasts, or videos—all based on your knowledge. Then, you can either give them away for promotional purposes or sell them. Buyers will instantly identify you as an authority in your field, and that can lead to other opportunities such as consulting offers or speaking engagements.

14. Form Strategic Alliances – If you want to reach a bigger audience, connect with others who have already reached your audience and find ways you can work together. When someone else introduces you to their networks, that endorsement can lead to immediate sales. You can cross-promote each other in your newsletters, co-sponsor an event, or just agree to send each other referrals.

15. Teach Classes and Workshops – Whether you sign up to teach at a local college or adult learning center, or you host workshops in your own office, teaching is not only a powerful way to establish your authority, it can be incredibly rewarding as well.

Whatever methods you use, it’s important that you find ways to set yourself apart from your competition. Consider what makes you unique and then figure out how to build that into your overall brand. Then challenge yourself to tackle one new tactic each month. I bet you’ll find big rewards in the end.

6 Guaranteed Ways To Position Yourself As An Authority

There are so many choices and options today when people are looking to solve a challenge or problem. So just how do they make that choice? They go to the trusted expert or authority who has built a relationship with them and has proven their expertise on their topic.

So when your community needs someone that offers the products or services that you do, will you be the authority that they turn to?Perhaps you are unsure about how to establish yourself as an authority on your topic?

Fear not.

I am going to share six guaranteed ways you can position yourself as a trusted authority with your community, industry, and/or topic.

6 Key Strategies To Become an Authority On Your Topic

1. Focus on a Niche

Don’t be a Jack-of-all-trades and master of none.

If you want people to see you as an authority, specialize in something. Pick a niche that narrowly focuses on your ideal clients and what they need or want.

For example, while I provide a variety of social media marketing and content marketing services, my specialty and what I’m best known for is LinkedIn. This is where 80% of my focus and energy is spent and what many people recognize me for. In fact, while having lunch with someone recently, they told me “when I think of LinkedIn, I think of Melonie Dodaro.”

The benefits of being so specialized are that you can really focus on solving the specific challenges and needs of your ideal clients.

With this level of specialization, you are also better able to personalize your message to speak directly to your ideal clients and connect with them emotionally, which is vital to your success in becoming an authority.

Remember, people want and expect personalization today. They want a message that speaks directly to them and their needs.

So how do you choose your niche?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you:

  • If you look at your industry, is there a gap that needs filling?
  • What unique skill or value can you offer your customers?
  • What is your ideal client’s biggest need or challenge?
  • What problems or needs have your existing customers shared with you?

Don’t be afraid to experiment until you find the right niche for your business and community.

2. Choose the Right Channels

Once you have chosen your niche, you must also select the right channels to share your knowledge and expertise. You don’t want to waste your time sharing your knowledge in places where your community is not spending time.

While you will always want to have a website full of helpful content and to build an email list (two things that you own and control), you will need to determine what, if any other online channels are being used by your community including which social media channels.

Do they spend their time on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat, or somewhere else?

You also need to consider how your community prefers to consume content. Do they prefer articles, graphics, podcasts, videos, live streaming, eBooks, or another form of content?

Knowing this will not only increase the engagement around your content but will also help you choose the right social media platforms to attract the right audience.

3. Provide Real Value

What do I mean by “real”?

By real, I mean it needs to be seen as (and experienced by) your ideal clients, existing customers, and the community at large as being of value to them.

What you think has value is meaningless. It is all about what your community values.

Always ask yourself, “What’s in it for them”.

At the end of the day, people all think WIIFM (what’s in it for me) when they are looking at what you or anyone else is providing.

Think about this from their perspective. If there is no clear benefit for them, then they will most likely not waste their time as there is so much competition for their time and attention.

Depending on your goal, industry, and community, some great ways to provide value is to create content such as:

  • blog posts
  • infographics
  • podcasts
  • checklists
  • reports
  • whitepapers
  • eBooks
  • videos
  • webinars

It also means not holding back. Share your best knowledge with your community.

You need to give them your best insider tips and tricks.

Now you may worry that by giving all your knowledge away that they won’t need you or that you might lose potential sales.

The opposite is true.

Those who will take and use your information to help themselves, often would not have been able or interested in paying for your services.  But by establishing yourself as an authority to them, they will happily recommend you to others – others who will happily pay you.

By providing those with the desire to pay for your products or services with the information they need to make an educated decision, you have not only established yourself as an authority but also built up the kind of trust that makes you a natural choice when they are ready to buy.

4. Be Consistent

Consistency is a key component to establishing your reputation as an authority and building the trust that comes with that reputation.

Being consistent proves that you are not a fly-by-night operation here to lure them in and take their money.

Reliability shows your community that you are a professional as well as an expert on your subject matter.

You must show your commitment to consistency in several ways.

Start with having a consistent brand and a voice that you use in all of your content and marketing materials.

This helps people to get to know you and easily identify anything created by you.

It also requires you to be regular in creating and posting content that helps them to be more successful. Additionally, your community needs to know that they can count on you to reply to their messages and comments in a reasonable amount of time.

5. Engage Your Community

You can help cement your position as an authority within your community by being open and engaging with your community.

This doesn’t just mean responding to comments and answering questions.

You need to ask your community what is important to them and what they need and then follow through based on that conversation.

Make an effort to celebrate the wins of individuals with your community as well as share the content that they create when relevant and appropriate.

Being the authority on your topic does not mean that it is all about you or that you know everything.

Don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know the answer to that but I will look into that for you.”

6. Build Relationships With Experts & Influencers

Finally, make a regular effort to reach out to other experts and influencers both in your niche and in related niches that target the same audience.

There are numerous benefits to this.

As well as aiding and providing additional value to your own community by introducing them to someone who can help them (in an area that you don’t), there is also the chance to be introduced to the community of the expert you are collaborating with. This is a fantastic way to expand your reach and gain even greater authority in the form of social proof and third-party credibility.

A great place to begin is by visiting their blog. Check out their content and if you think there is value leave a comment and share that content with your community. This introduces your community to them and is a nice gesture to send traffic their way.

You may then want to reach out on social media, particularly on a platform like Twitter where you can start or join a conversation with them in a natural way.

Remember to approach this process slowly. It can take time to get on their radar and build a relationship with them. But the investment of this time and effort can really pay off in the increased authority and community size you gain.

Wrapping Up

While it takes time and works to position yourself as an authority on your topic, the benefits you receive will be worth the investment.

As the trusted expert, you will be the first choice in the minds of your community when it comes time to invest in the services you offer. This is because you have not only helped them to know, like, and trust you, but you have also clearly demonstrated the expertise that proves you can help them solve their challenge or problem.

7 Incredible Benefits of Becoming a Recognized Leader in Your Industry

How can a thought leadership strategy put you head and shoulders above your competition?

Putting yourself out there is scary – trust me, I know!

When I first started sharing my opinions in podcasts and then videos, I felt nervous. But I knew that if I wanted to stand out and be seen as a content repurposing authority, I had to create content. In this digital age, there’s no two ways about it.

Not to mention, I had to practice what I preach!

I knew that if I consistently followed a content approach based on thought leadership and building my personal brand, it would pay off in the long-term.

I’ve seen this strategy generate benefits for businesses across many different industries. It just takes commitment.

So, what’s holding you back from embracing a thought leadership strategy? Find out what you and your business could be missing out on…

What is a thought leader?

A thought leader is someone who stands out in their industry thanks to their informed opinions. They’re recognized authorities and the go-to people in their field for their trusted expertise.

A thought leadership strategy in content marketing terms is a way to position yourself or your brand so that you build authority and credibility within your industry. It’s a way to get noticed, set yourself apart from your competition, and win business.

You’ve probably heard this strategy described before as “developing a personal brand”, “becoming known” or even that dreaded word “influencer”.

I certainly prefer the term thought leader as opposed to influencer. Both ultimately mean someone who has influence, which is definitely part of a thought leadership strategy, but “influencer” has, unfortunately, become a bit of a dirty word.

It’s important to recognize how truly powerful influence can be though. It’s about affecting the decisions of others because of a person’s authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with their audience. This is ultimately what a thought leadership content strategy aims to do.

How do you become a thought leader?

Thought leaders share their opinions and points of view in a way that’s beneficial to others. It’s a way to provide value, grow your audience, and guide them towards your thinking to build authority.

Thought leadership content is often information-based or educational, it can be inspiring and/or entertaining too – depending on the topic or thought leader’s personality!

Thought leaders need to share their perspectives frequently, at least once a week, in my opinion. These ideas should also relate to what you want to be known for. Consider these questions to start planning what you need to be talking about:

  • What are the core pillars of your brand or business?
  • What do you want people to associate you with?
  • How do you want to be perceived in your industry?

As you repeatedly share your ideas (preferably your unique and bold ideas), people will recognize that you’re an authority in that field. They’ll come to you with their questions and look to you for advice.

Like any content strategy, thought leadership requires hard, consistent work. But is it worth it?

I definitely think so!

There are some incredible long-term benefits to investing in a thought leadership content strategy. Here are 7 reasons why a thought leadership strategy is worth it…

1. Reach more people

A thought-leadership strategy is content-driven. Content is how you’re delivering your opinions to your audience. It’s the proof in the pudding that you know what you’re talking about.

In this connected world that we live in, expecting to be recognized as a leader in your industry without creating and sharing any content is totally unrealistic.

Now, it doesn’t really matter what kind of content you create. It could be video, podcast, blog format, livestream…whatever’s the best medium for you…but consistency is the key. Repeatedly and reliably getting your message out there will help you reach more people and attract more clients to your business.

2. Build trust

A consistent approach coupled with sharing valuable thoughts will not only grow your audience, but it’ll build their trust in you too.

Trust is a powerful part of the sales process. If people already trust you thanks to your content and leadership, then the easier your sales conversation will be. People will be ready to invest in those they trust when the time comes.

If your prospect isn’t ready to make a buying decision, or you think that they’re not right for your business, your thought leadership content could help. You could share content that answers their questions and makes them feel secure that your business is right for them, or content to convince them otherwise – depending on the prospect!

There’s one content format that builds trust above all others: video. I talked about this in my interview with captivating video creator Mike Ganino. Check out the episode How to Create Captivating Video Content with Mike Ganino to find out why video is the best content type for building trust.

3. Attract talent and build a strong team

Creating a strong personal brand through thought leadership won’t just attract more leads, it’ll also attract the best talent.

Nothing is more important to your business than having the right people in your team. Thought leadership and a great personal brand are magnetizing, and people will gravitate towards working with you.

I’ve worked with costly recruitment agencies in the past, but some of my best hires have actually been due to our content! Two of our recent new hires found out about Content 10x through my podcast…so it’s funny sometimes the things your content can do for you.

In fact, when people apply to be part of the Content 10x team, I ask why they want to work with us – you might be surprised just how often people say it’s because of our content! It just goes to show how content builds trust in so many different ways.

4. Improve credibility

Credibility is a key factor in establishing authority. I’ve already mentioned how being consistent can build credibility, and I talk about it a lot in episode 171, 7 Reasons Why You Should Create Episodic Content, but think about the other benefits of this.

Your competitors are also trying to win business. When it comes down to it, potential customers could be swayed by who is more credible. If your strategy is geared towards establishing authority and credibility, then great! But if you’re not sure about sharing your knowledge, then your competitor might spot an opportunity to share theirs, and you could miss out.

5. More opportunities will arise

As you establish yourself within your industry and your audience grows, so will your opportunities. It’s like compound interest – the more you have, the more you get!

You could be invited to do podcast interviews, speak at events, or you may even get featured in the press. Opportunities to collaborate and participate in new spaces are fantastic for getting in front of audiences who may not have heard of you before. Increased exposure is good all around, from getting your message to a new crowd, growing your audience, and receiving more opportunities.

6. Inviting to pitch for more work

If you’re in an industry or business where you need to pitch or tender for work, then it’s not always easy to get a foot in the door. But if people know who you are and what you do, they will want to know what you can do for them.

Thought leadership helps establish authority which makes you more appealing to potential clients. They’ll want to hear what you can bring to the table, and you’ll see a rise in people inviting you to pitch to them.

Obviously, having more leads and opportunities is a good thing, but it also means you can be more selective. You could have your pick of who you want to work with (not who you have to). Any business owner knows how much of a win that is!

7. Win awards!

Industry awards may sometimes be considered a vanity metric, but they can also add weight to your achievements and help position you as an industry leader.

If you’re already an authority in your industry and nominated for an award, you might even be more likely to win.

It’s a vicious circle where those who are already popular will become more popular. However, if you’ve got the content to prove that you deserve the award, then what’s stopping you? You could win the Oscar-equivalent in your industry!

At Content 10x, we’ve helped clients launch podcasts and video shows and create more content, leading to nominations for all kinds of industry awards. Our clients get invited to events and have received various accolades thanks to what their content has helped them achieve.

How can you become a thought leader?

I hope those 7 benefits have shown you what’s possible when you embrace a thought leadership content strategy and invest in building a strong personal brand.

Of course, it is a long game, but it is so worth it. I’ve seen what it does for our clients, and I know it’s possible for your business too.

You don’t have to go it alone either. If you don’t have a lot of time to work on your content, our services can help you establish authority without over-dedicating yourself to content creation. Do reach out to us if you want to make this a reality.

You can also check out our flagship LinkedIn 10x Service, where we help you build influence within your industry.

Rules of genuine authority

1. If you have “guru” anywhere on your profile, Facebook page, website, blog, or email signature, I don’t trust your authority.

2. Valid experience – plainly and clearly stated – is the best way to establish authority.

3. Peer reviews and client recommendations are the second best way to establish authority.

4. Give me those things first, then give me links to your articles and posts and so on.

5. Give me those things first, and give me links to your free informative articles and posts and so on, before you even mention selling me anything.

6.  Don’t be offended when people question your authority. Quick-to-offense tells me you are insecure about your own position.

7. I don’t care if you are the foremost expert in your field, blah blah blah. In fact, if that’s what you claim, it makes me distrust you. I just want you to know more than I do. That’s enough. If you can share some of your knowledge with me in a fluff-free, efficient manner, that’s really helpful.

8. It actually helps me to see that you are a real person. Don’t burden me with minutiae, but be real. A real person trying to sound like a non-human entity makes me question your sincerity. And if I’m questioning your sincerity, then your authority no longer really matters.

9. A real person trying to sound real ends up sounding fake. Don’t try to sound real. Just be real. Maybe don’t market yourself… just be yourself.

10. It’s okay to say you don’t know. I trust you more if you can admit your own limits.
